The Laundry Lab: Towels
Part of the problem that comes with towels over time is they get stiff and scratchy. That soft, cuddle up feeling is gone and they are no longer as plush as they once were. This comes from a buildup of laundry products…detergents and fabric softeners…sinking into the very fibers of the fabric, so what you end up with is a stiff, scratchy, nonabsorbent towel. Follow these steps to get softer, fluffier towels.

- Run the towels through a complete wash cycle with 1/2 cup of white vinegar instead of your usual laundry detergent. This helps to rid the towels of the laundry product buildup.
- Run the towels through the wash cycle again, only this time use your usual laundry detergent but don’t use fabric softener. Replace your fabric softener with 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Don’t like the smell of vinegar? Not to worry. The towels come out smelling clean and fresh without even a hint of vinegar.
- Put them in the dryer but don’t over dry. Over drying will reduce the longevity of your towels and contribute to stiffness and scratchiness.
